Xiumei Li, a workaholic microbiology lab assistant, has travelled from Tianjin, China, to Manchester, England, searching for her missing husband, Haiming, a low-level diplomatic bureaucrat recently disappeared from a supposedly official delegation. To her surprise, the Chinese consulate in Manchester refuses to assist her, denying Haiming was ever in the office and crudely inferring that he’s having an affair based on his reputation.
